About this tool

BMI Calculator computes your Body Mass Index from your height and weight, and classifies your result according to both WHO and Asian (Korean) standards. The WHO and Asian standards differ — Asian guidelines use lower thresholds because of body composition differences. Note that BMI does not account for muscle mass, so it should be used as a general reference rather than a definitive health assessment.

How to use

  1. Enter your height (cm) and weight (kg).
  2. Your BMI value and obesity classification under both WHO and Korean (Asian) standards are displayed.
  3. Compare your result with the normal weight range for health management reference.

FAQ

What is the BMI formula?

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m) squared. For example, if you are 170 cm tall and weigh 65 kg, your BMI is 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) ≈ 22.5.

How do the WHO and Asian (Korean) standards differ?

Under WHO standards, underweight is below 18.5, normal is 18.5–24.9, overweight is 25–29.9, and obese is 30 or above. The Asian (Korean) standard sets normal at 18.5–23, overweight at 23–25, and obese at 25 or above — stricter thresholds reflecting body composition characteristics of Asian populations.

Can BMI alone determine my health status?

BMI does not account for muscle mass, body fat percentage, or bone structure. Athletes with high muscle mass may show a high BMI despite being healthy. It is best to use BMI alongside other metrics such as body fat percentage for a more complete picture.
